Five Broncos miss Denver's opening OTA practice

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Five players were sidelined Tuesday as the Broncos began organized team activities, and Head Coach Vance Joseph stressed that the team was "being smart" as the players continued to rehab.

Tackle Jared Veldheer (foot), guard Ron Leary (knee soreness), tight end Troy Fumagalli (sports hernia), wide receiver Jordan Taylor (hips) and Clinton McDonald (procedure) all missed Tuesday's practice.

Joseph suggested the Broncos would hold Veldheer out of practice until he fully recovered from a broken foot that landed him on Arizona's injured reserve list in 2017.

"We want to be smart and get him totally healthy before he plays again," Joseph said.

Leary was held out for precautionary reasons, while Fumagalli has not yet been cleared to return to action.

Joseph said he expects Taylor to be ready by the midway point of training camp. McDonald underwent a procedure about two months ago, but Joseph did not provide a timetable for his return.

Joseph emphasized the team would prioritize the long-term health of its players as the Broncos continue in OTAs.

"Our goal is to get out of OTAs healthy," Joseph said. "We want every guy that we came in with healthy and to go to training camp with a full roster of healthy players."
